An adaptation of the novel by Robin Maugham. Joseph Losey first approached Pinter about the adaptation in 1960. In 1961 Michael Anderson acquired the film rights and he commissioned a script from Pinter, but he could not secure financial backing. Losey took over the rights and worked with Pinter on a new script that went into production in 1963.
